Radio Studios Get First Airing

Radio broadcasters of the future were given a glimpse of the new School of Art and Design radio studios in Ellen Terry recently. The Open Day for potential Coventry University students was the perfect opportunity to show off the state-of-the-art facilities which form part of a multimedia portfolio encompassing newsgathering, TV, radio, video, photography
and digital editing. The two studios have the potential for radio drama production and full “as live” music and/or speech based sequence programme production. Students will also be able to produce broadcast standard news programmes, bulletins and inserts as well as demo tapes for future career prospects. Senior Lecturer in Broadcast Journalism, Tim Coleman told Buzz that he wished facilities of this standard had been available to him as a student. The Digital studio is self-operated with a fully automated and programmable desk
and playout system, giving the option of one presenter with up to 4 guests. It also accomodates external input from CD, Mini-disk, cassette and compact flash, integrating with the departments’ new digital Marantz recorders. The Analogue studio is split into two spaces, allowing for sound-proofed separation between presenters/contributors and producer and the potential for “as live” phone-ins. The two new studios will be able to communicate with the newsroom and other facilities in the building, ensuring the portfolio remains future proof and responds to developments in the broadcast industry.
