Igglepiggle, Makka Pakka,Upsy Daisy and Tombiloos are the latest popular culture phenomenon writes John Mair. They come from Stratford upon Avon and the mind of Anne Wood, the genius of British pre-school TV. In the Night Garden has just started on CBeebies. One hundred episodes made at a cost of £14.5million. Soon two year olds throughout the world will be chanting ‘Makka Pakka, akka wakka, micka makka moo! Makka Pakka, appa yakka, ikka akka oo’. Anne has form. She created Teletubbies ten years ago. That is now a global phenomenon. Tinky Winky, La-la, Dipsy and Po have entertained children in 120 countries. It has been dubbed into forty five languages. Teletubbies are probably Britain’s biggest TV export. Anne also created Rosie and Jim and Brum from her Ragdoll Productions.
