Jane Tranter: A Valuable Insight
Thursday 22nd March in the Humber Theatre, Coventry
Jane Tranter is the new BBC Head of Fiction (which means that she’s seriously important and responsible for everything on the BBC that’s not ‘factual’). Jane was live down the line from a BBC studio, a recording of the talk is available. Students were given a valuable insight into the job market at the BBC. Apart from a brief stint at Carlton, Tranter has worked continously at Broadcasting House since leaving university, working her way up from secretarial assistant to floor managing, producing and commissioning. She advocated her own career path as one to follow: if you want a creative job at the BBC, accept any post at all (provided that you are reasonably competent) as a way of getting to know the key staff. Further interesting snippets included Jane’s comparison of drama at the BBC with Channel 4 and ITV, her eclectic tastes in treatments and writing styles and her support of notable directors and producers. She appeared honest, level-headed, candid and is probably the right person in the right job at the right time.
