“Summer flowers for Coventry Conversations”
Thursday 24 May at 1pm in the Ellen Terry Building at Coventry University, Room ETG34
Next week the Chelsea Flower Show will be in full bloom and the woman who was responsible for getting it onto the television for the BBC is going to be taking part in a Coventry Conversation.
The Chelsea Flower Show is s a vital part of the English summer for those fortunate enough to visit the show but to those who watch it on the small screen, it has to capture the spectacle of the event live for 10 hours each year.
Karen Arrand was the BBC producer responsible for bringing the show into our living rooms in 2000 to 2003 and she will share her secrets in a special Coventry Conversation on Thursday 24 May at 1pm.
Karen took over the Show when it came back to the BBC after Channel Four had televised it for a few years. She transformed it into a great watch which generated the biggest audience for BBC Two in 2002 and 2003.
Karen managed large teams in front as well as behind the camera working with some of the best known names in the gardening world.
The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Madeleine Atkins will introduce Karen for her talk.
Karen will share with the audience how the televising of the Chelsea Flower Show was done, look at some of the highs as well as the lows and what lessons she learned doing it all.
Karen now lectures part-time in Media Production at Coventry University
John Mair, the organiser of the Conversations says:
“In the very week of the show, we get to see inside the mind of one of the architects of televising it. This is a rare opportunity to find out how it is all done. It should be very interesting and intriguing”
