Four major media figures came to Coventry University on Thursday October 11th each giving a talk on either researching, creating, regulating or observing the advertising industry. Headlined by Sir John Hegarty, one of only 3 British advertisers to get into the Hall of Fame, who gave an inspirational talk about advertising’s power.

The power of ideas, fame, recognition, truth and irreverence were demonstrated by Hegarty by adverts - ‘The Lynx Effect’, ‘Polaroid - not a camera, a social lubricant’, ‘Johnny Walker - keep walking’ and Vorsprung Durch Technik - all part of his impressive back catalogue. He is most famous for his Levi’s campaigns from the 501 ads to Flat Eric. Also on the line-up were the Director General of the Advertising Standards Authority, talking about the way the organisation regulates the industry and showing plenty of banned ads. John Tylee has observed the industry from Campaign magazine’s offices for 25 years and talked about how it has changed and the challenges it now faces including how to (and not to) advertise to an ageing population. Finally, representatives from one of the largest market research companies in the world - Millward Brown - came in to demonstrate how they altered adverts from the responses they got. The very famous Guinness advert with horses in the waves looked very different in the first draft stage.
