Five Coventry University students studying for an MA in automotive journalism have launched Automotive, a 32-page car magazine.

The magazine was conceived, written, photographed and designed by the students with help from course tutors. Production costs have been covered thanks to support from Peugeot, the Guild of Motoring Writers and Coventry School of Art and Design.

“This is the third time our MA course has produced a magazine,” said automotive journalism lecturer Andrew Noakes. “The drive and enthusiasm of this year’s students has made the 2008 edition of Automotive the best issue yet.”

The five MA students – George Barrow, Tom Coulthard, Raja Ezrin Kamarudin, Ali Umar and Craig McAlpine – have since embarked on work experience placements with automotive magazine publishers, contracts with motoring TV programmes and freelance commissions from car magazines. They will return to Coventry in April to complete their studies.

MA students on Coventry’s global and health journalism courses have also produced a magazine, called Global Eye. “A real magazine production project like this gives them a chance to hone their skills,” said Dr John Lister, programme director for the MA journalism course. “It’s given them a real insight into the practicalities of magazine publishing.”

All six of last year’s automotive journalism graduates are now working full-time for motoring magazines and websites, or in the motor industry itself. Graduates from the course work for What Car?, Auto Express, Sky Motoring, cardesignnews.com and several other motoring media.
