Nine lucky journalism students from Coventry University had the opportunity to look in to their futures after being given a guided tour around the BBC studios in Birmingham writes Iain Green.
The highlight of the day for the first and second year students was to watch the lunchtime edition of Midlands Today go out, whilst sitting in the studio’s gallery.
The aspiring journalists started the day by receiving a talk from Midlands Today Editor Chas Watkin, who talked about the way that his team put the news programme together, as well as describing the difficulties that await the students in their quest to get a job in journalism.
After stressing that “getting hands-on experience within the field” is the best way for the future journalists to stand out from the rest, Watkin handed the group over to radio supremo Jenny Wilkes, who showed the students around the expansive radio studios. The group then had the opportunity to watch the legendary Ed Doolan in action as he was presenting his ‘Breakfast’ show.
After a brief look around the remainder of the BBC facilities, the mix of first year and second year students took to their seats in the gallery to witness an experience that they will never forget, that of a watching a live news bulletin go out on air.
Event organiser and university lecturer John Mair was pleased with the experience that his students gained from watching the professionals at work. “It was a fabulous day and the students really enjoyed themselves,” he said. “Hopefully the group were able to absorb the information that they received and take this information and experience to help them improve their university work.”
