The Department of Media and Communication offers you contemporary courses designed for today’s communication, media and cultural industries. The practical work includes the use of digital as well as traditional media, and our study of theory and criticism looks closely at contemporary ideas and debates. The Department offers a diverse range of taught undergraduate courses in the fields of
Communication, Culture & Media
The courses cover a wide range of communication, culture and media theory and practice. You could be involved in activities such as producing professional videos for live clients, working on photographic studies of ethnicity and race, redesigning public signing in the locality, critically analysing recent television phenomena such as Celebrity Big Brother or Sex and the City, getting to grips with the intellectual arguments concerning postmodernism and the contemporary media world, or producing a news item in our radio or television studios. Recent student projects include filming on location in Prague, working on a critical incident plan for Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, and interviewing (former) Prime Minister Tony Blair on film! The department has excellent links and partnerships with regional, national and international media and cultural industries, such as Avid UK, BBC Coventry & Warwickshire, BBC Radio Oxford, Compton Verney House, Haymarket Publications, Los Angeles Short Mondays, Screen West Midlands, and Arts Council of England.
All of our courses offer students the opportunity to undertake professional experience in the summer term of their second year. Here you will undertake a live project or a work placement, and you will have the opportunity to put into practice what you have learned at the University. This will also give you an edge when you are looking for employment on graduation.
